Chapter 6
At the bay, 1211.
“The inland caves I’m about to take you to, are very precious to my parents. The deepest cavern is the place where my father took my mother the night they first discovered their bond had taken form.” Jamie stood near his half-beached skiff with Annabella on the curve of the cove where the soft sand remained dry. This woman had captured his attention years ago, and well before the last full moon had arisen and a bond had formed between them, one their fae kind desired with all their heart and soul, a bond they’d soon complete. Only a fortnight remained, and then they’d be able to speak vows. When they did, he’d make her his in every possible way.
“I hope ’twill be a most precious place for us too.” The wind blew her glossy golden locks about, one strand fluttering free and swirling through the air.
“As do I.” He plucked the strand out of the air before it could wisp away on the breeze, wound it around his finger then slipped it carefully inside the pocket of his black leather pants. “Are you ready? The caves are only a short walk away.”
“I’m ready, and I would go anywhere with you.” She beamed and skipped around him. “Lead the way.”
“Then come.” With the skies darkening, he guided her toward the mouth of the river to one side of the cove then together, they trekked alongside the gurgling waters leading deeper into their clan land. The forest rose high either side of the stream, the dense pines thickening the farther they walked. Pine needles covered the trail and birds chirped from their nests in the canopy above, while higher still, two hawks soared as they caught the stronger air currents.
Onward, he tramped, one hand on Annabella’s elbow to ensure she didn’t lose her footing on the rough terrain. She bubbled with excitement, her cheeks flushed and eyes bright, then as they reached the craggy rocks rimming the underground inland cave, she gasped and clutched a hand to her mouth as she stared downward into the darkened basin below.
“I’ll carry you.” He scooped her up against his chest and she wound her arms around his neck, her fingers tangling in his hair.
“I’m so glad I convinced you to bring me here this day.” She nuzzled his neck, the sensation of her exquisite touch so damn mesmerizing.
“In all truth, so am I.” He’d hated keeping his distance from her of late, only his fear that he’d never be able to keep himself from touching her before they spoke vows had been the primary reason why he’d done so. Two more weeks, then he’d make her his.
Watching his step, he maneuvered down the edge of the rocky basin to the tunnel’s entrance then set her gently on her feet and taking her hand, moved ahead of her to guide their way down the tight passageway of dirt and stone.
Water dripped from the gritty ceiling overhead and splashed his booted feet.
